1871 Fall

1871 June

Press and McCulloch

In June 1871 the McCulloch ministry fell, replaced by Gavin Duffy. Sections of the Press exulted in McCulloch’s fall. He was a figure of hatred whose many alleged misdeeds won him deep seated, often unhinged, enmity.

In 1893 George Charmier published a much neglected novel about boomtime Melbourne.
