Marvellous Melbourne

Meet George Augustus Henry Sala.

In 1885 Mr Sala, a celebrated journalist and public lecturer, promulgated the term “Marvellous Melbourne”. The sobriquet has stuck.

Mr Sala was a busy chap. Amongst his accomplishments was an erotic novel, “The Mysteries of Verbena House,” about a young Headmistress whose passion for the School Chaplain was kindled and then enthusiastically sustained by birching her students. The Chaplain had experience of the salutary effects of flogging at Eton and recommended its employment at Verbena House. This may explain why Mr Sala adopted the nom de plume Etonensis.
Interestingly, behaviours of this nature are currently the subject of a long and wide ranging Royal Commission.
Marvellous coincidence.
